Rooney Family Law is a Scottish law firm that practises family law and nothing else. No conveyancing, no wills, no criminal work. Every solicitor in the firm spends every working day on divorce, children, cohabitation and financial provision under Scots law, and the firm holds accreditation from the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Family Law.
A firm that does one thing
Most Scottish high street firms treat family law as one department among several. We do not have other departments. That focus is the whole point of the firm: when the law changes, when a sheriff takes a particular view, when a pension sharing valuation does not add up, we are dealing with it that week rather than once a quarter.
We advise on divorce and civil partnership dissolution, arrangements for children including residence and contact, the rights of unmarried couples who separate, financial provision on separation, protective orders, and pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements. We appear in sheriff courts throughout Scotland and in the Court of Session, and we negotiate and settle the majority of cases without a proof.
Because the firm practises family law and nothing else, we are asked regularly about matters we do not take on. Rooney Family Law also operates I Need A Lawyer To, a Scots law information service covering executry and wills, personal injury, medical negligence, property and commercial disputes as well as family matters. Enquiries made through that site are passed to a panel of Scottish firms.
What our advice costs
We publish fixed fees where a case can properly be fixed, and we quote realistically where it cannot. Three of our fixed fees are set out below and cover straightforward, undefended cases.

Where a matter cannot sensibly be fixed, we charge on a time basis, recorded in three-minute units rather than the six-minute unit used across most of the profession. A two-minute telephone call is billed as one unit, not as a block twice that length. Our full charging structure, including hourly rates, is set out on our fees page, and payment arrangements can be discussed where cost is a difficulty.
We do not offer Legal Aid. If you may be eligible, please check your position with the Scottish Legal Aid Board before contacting us, so that you are not put to unnecessary trouble.
Where we act
We have eight offices across central Scotland and act for clients throughout Scotland by telephone and video where that is more convenient. All offices are seen by appointment, and our solicitors travel to whichever office suits you rather than the other way round.

Our solicitors
The firm is led by Managing Partner Brian Rooney, who is accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Family Law. Accreditation is granted only to solicitors who can demonstrate substantial and current experience in the field and who are reassessed periodically. Our solicitors are supported by experienced paralegals, and you deal with your solicitor directly rather than through a call centre.
